Digital Savages

Building on from musings and criticisms about Marc Prensky’s ‘Digital Native and Immigrant’ labels. I want to put forward that we are taking the risk of creating ‘Digital Savages’. Digital Savages are enthusiastic about taking up new technology but have no idea about how to manage it. A digital savage is the manager who always has their mobile email on and is found emailing at one or two in the morning, it is also the person who listens to mobile music without headphones on the bus. They have no concept how to intergrate the technology in the social context they are existing in.

Many educational establishments are frightened of new technologies and ban them (think of mobile phones and Social Network sites), instead of teaching learners and educators how to use technology usefully they ban them. So the technology becomes subversive and no one learns how to manage their technology but instead become managed by it.
