MobileMe - A bit too late?

Apple have been repackaging their .Mac service as MobileMe, offering access to features such as Push email, calendars and filestores on the go. With the launch of the Iphone and Ipod Touch it’s a logical move by Apple to offer a service which allows users to access the same emails and files on their desktop or laptop and ‘i’ device. In a push at the business market and Microsoft dominated desktop market the system will also work with Outlook. But is it too late?

In terms of push email this is a late offering. Blackberry have almost become synoumous with push email functionality and Nokia, Palm, Microsoft etc.. All have similar offerings and proven track records. There are also mobile email amlagamation services such as Flurry which give users the chance to bring all their emails into one place and the service is free. Of course the giants Google are already there and offered a raft of services for mobile users for quite sometime including email and calendar access on mobiles, again this is free for many users.

MobileMe will cost $99 per annum for the basic 20GB package. Will anyone pay? Well .Mac is widely used and charged for so quite probably? However this is also Web 2.0 and convergence and Apple is new here. It is still relatively early days for the Iphone and it is very expensive. Established rival such as Nokia are not sitting on laurels, never are Google, both have phones on the way that will challenge the IPhone.

But this is Apple and they seem to have knack of knowing when. MP3 players were already available before the Ipod but Apple brought it to the masses. Their designs may not always have the latest technology but they are designed well, especially in terms of asthetics. Apple products always look like the latest thing and that makes them stand out. So MobileMe although late may well suprise everyone…
