3G expansion in India

3G mobile connectivity is set to expand into India. According the The Telegraph the Indian Government will be holding an auction to access the network later this year. With the UN already viewing mobile Internet connectivity as a means of bridging the global digital divide then the news from India gives further credibility to that claim.

3G (or 3rd Generation) connectivity offers a faster Internet experience that current 2G (aka GPRS) connectivity. Well designed mobile web services will load very quickly on a 3G devices with a good connection. For large countries, such as India, it can effectively offer nationwide Internet availability even in remote areas with the right wireless infrastructure. This should in turn open up markets and services. For example good 3G connectivity could help offer medical or educational information via the Internet to remote areas and access to Government and commercial services. This example of convergence shows the potential power of the mobile web.

With the impeding availability of the Internet via 3G in India the mobile web is an increasingly attractive place to do business in the global market.
